Surrounded Self-Portraits – This Art Fair – DOOR Open Space Amsterdam – 2025

For This Art Fair (June 5–8, 2025 at DOOR Open Space, Amsterdam), I presented Surrounded Self-Portrait, a monumental charcoal installation on unbleached cotton. This 7.5-meter-wide landscape drawing brings to life memories of all the places where I have felt at home. Large sections of the landscape are based on imagery from my birth country, Niger, where I spent my early childhood as the child of expats. Other fragments are drawn from gardens and houseplants in Breda and Rijen, where I later experienced a sense of belonging.

These combined memories form one expansive landscape that provides context for a portion of the self-portrait I exhibited—originating from the installation Intertwined Surroundings.
The fair featured works by a total of 130 artists across a wide range of disciplines.

Voor This Art Fair (5–8 juni 2025 in DOOR Open Space, Amsterdam) presenteerde ik “Surrounded Self-Portrait”, een monumentale installatie in houtskool op ongebleekt katoen. In deze 7,5 meter brede landschaps­tekening komen herinneringen tot leven aan alle plekken waar ik me ooit thuis heb gevoeld. Grote delen van het landschap zijn gebaseerd op beelden uit mijn geboorteland Niger, waar ik als kind van expats mijn vroege jeugd doorbracht. Andere fragmenten zijn ontleend aan de achtertuin en kamerplanten van plekken in Breda en Rijen, waar ik later een gevoel van thuis ervoer.
Deze samengevoegde herinneringen vormen samen één groot landschap dat context biedt aan een deel van het zelfportret dat ik toonde — afkomstig uit de installatie “Intertwined Surroundings”.
De beurs presenteerde het werk van in totaal 130 kunstenaars, verspreid over een breed scala aan disciplines.
